Bart Verspagen - Economics
Bart Verspagen - Overview of my scientific work
I am an economist specialized in the economics of
technological change. I did my undergraduate studies at the University
of Limburg (now called Maastricht University) in Maastricht, the
Netherlands, from 1984 - 1988. After that, I obtained a PhD degree from
the same university in 1992. During the five years after that, I held a
scholarship from the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences
(KNAW). My workplace is the Economics Department of Maastricht University, as well as the research institute UNU-Merit in Maastricht. At the university, I hold the chair of International Economics.
My
research interests are fairly broad. The centre area is the process of
economic growth, and its relation to technological change. This also
brings me into areas such as international trade theory, industrial
dynamics, economic and technology history, and, of course, applied
econometrics, statistics and mathematical modelling. With regard to the
latter, I have mainly been applying evolutionary theory to economics.
This includes simulation modelling of international economies.
Right
now, I am doing work in four main areas. First, I continue to work on
my database of European patents. This includes work on inventor
networks, and patenting by individual firms or technology classes. My
database includes details about all European patent applications, and
citations between them. I have been able to assign all European patents
to regions, and make use of this dimension of the data.
My
second focal point right now is work on evolutionary models, done
jointly with Gerald Silverberg. We are working on elaborating our
percolation model of technological search.
The
third focal point is a textbook on the economics of technological
change for undergraduates, specifically engineering students. If you
would like to have a look at the unfinished manuscript, feel free to
contact me. I hope to finish the manuscript in 2008.
Fourth and finally, you may want to check out the DIME website for a network of which I am coordinator.
Downloadable recent work
The best place to find online access to my work is through my RePec profile,
where you will find links to most working paper and published papers in
journals that are available online. In addition to this, you can
download my PhD thesis of 1992, in pdf format.
Downloadable published work If
you are looking for downloadable papers (fullversions), here are some
quick links/DOIs (you need acces to publisher's sites through your own
institution; if you don't have this access, you will not be able to
click your way to the pdf's). Please note that this is NOT my full
publications list, it only lists the items that are available online in
full formar, for a full publications list, please check my cv.
